How Does Chlorine Affect Your Hair And Skin And How To Remove It?

is chlorine bad for you?

Swimming has always been a favourite hobby of mine, to relax the body, be it a recovery from a hard workout or to calm the mind after a day’s work. Some of you may be like me, or you may be a triathlete, a competitive swimmer, someone who’s just learning to waddle, or it’s just vacation time where you just chill down by taking a long dip in a swimming pool.

Hadn’t we realized, we are exposed to the harsh chlorine chemicals in the pool. Chlorine is added into swimming pools to kill bacteria and germs such as E. coli, if its concentration and pH are maintained. It is good for us, however too much can negatively affect your hair and skin. It may result in dry, flaky skin, premature wrinkles, or damaged hair, as the chlorine will get into the skin, stripping away natural oils, sebum or water. As our skin and hair is made out of proteins, these chemicals will bind with the proteins to give a reaction.

There are some ways that you could apply to remove the chlorine after your swim. Firstly, is to wear a swim cap to minimise contact. Secondly, you could wet your hair with fresh water before swimming, allowing the hair to soak up the fresh water, thus it’s less likely to absorb the pool’s water. One of the best ways to remove chlorine is to shower after swimming with an antioxidant body and hair wash. Most of the time, people mentioned that a soap will do the work, but soaps only lathers, and removes the dirt and bacteria. No wonder those using soap still smell of chlorine even an afterbath. An effective wash specially formulated to remove chlorine is well worth spending if it will help save your scalp from itching, skin from drying and body chlorine free. Also remember to keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water after and slather on a good moisturiser.

Now, grab your goggles and towel, let’s head to the pool for a splash or clock in a good amount of training for your next event.

As you mentioned, the best thing to protect the hair is wearing a cap. I usually wear a cap and then go for a hair wash after swimming. These tips are so practical. Thanks for sharing it here!
